『くねくね』（『Wiggly Figure』 Japanese edition）
So the story I read “Better if you don’t know”
is a lot like something I experienced as a child. What I experienced wasn’t frightening at all, but when I combined my story and their story it became really scary.
When I was a child, I went to my mom’s side of the family in Akita to visit. We only went there once a year during the Obon festival. My older brother and I went to play outside with excitement as soon as we got there. It felt different than being in the city the air was so much clearer. We ran around together in the rice fields.
The sun was high, right around noon time all the sudden the wind stopped. It felt strangely warm and odd. I shouted out “It’s already hot! Why does the wind need to feel so mucky!” I pouted. Then I realized my brother was looking at different direction. There was a scarecrow at that direction. “Is there something wrong with that scarecrow?” I asked my brother. “No, but further back, ” he replied and was staring beyond the scarecrow, and stared at the rice fields. Then I saws something too. What is that?
It was far away so I couldn’t tell exactly, but something white that was the size of a person was squirming around. Wiggling around. All that was around us was the rice field, there’s nobody else around I thought it was weird, but I said to my brother “It’s probably a new type of scarecrow. There were no moving scarecrows so a farmer must of thought of it! It’s probably moving with the wind.” My brother agreed to what I thought but then he froze. The wind stopped and the thing was still wiggling around. “Hey… that things still moving… what is that thing?”. He sounded surprised and our curiosity kept on growing. My brother went home and got a binocular. He said with excitement “I’m going to look at it first so wait a Sec!” and looked in the binoculars.
I was surprised with my brothers sudden changed and asked. “What was it?” My brother replied slowly, “ It’s better IF yOu doN’t kNow” It didn’t sound like my brother. My brother then walked home. I wanted to look at the thing that made my brother turn pale, and picked up the binoculars. But I was too scared after hearing my brother’s warning. But I was still curious. From far away it just looks like something white wiggling around. It is odd, but it wasn’t scary. But my brother… I have to look. I need to know with my own eyes what scared my brother so much! I tried to look into the binoculars, but then my grandpa came running towards me panicked. I asked him “What’s wrong?” My grandpa still panicked “You must not look at the white figure! Did you look at it!? Did you look at it with those binoculars!?” shouted at me. I said “I haven’t yet…” timidly. “I’m so glad to hear that” my grandpa said to me crying. I didn’t know what was going on but I was taken home.
When I came home everyone was crying. Was it about me? No, it wasn’t. My brother was the only one laughing in the room manically. Wiggling around winding around just like that white figure outside. I thought my brother was scarier then that white figure.
On the day we headed back home my grandma said “It’s better if you leave your brother here. It’s a small place out there and people talking about each other… he won’t even last a few days. It’s better if you leave him here and we’ll let him out in the rice field after a few years.” I heard these words and started to cry out. My brother, I knew was no longer there anymore. Even if I come back next year to visit, it won’t be my brother anymore. Why did this happen? We were just playing together a few days ago? I tried to stop my tears and got in the car.
My grandparents waved at us goodbye, and I thought brother waved at me then too. The car runs off, I tried to look at my brother again and looked at him through my binoculars. My brother was crying. He was smiling, but it’s a sad expression my brother never said before. His first and last sad crying smile. The car turned the corner and I couldn’t see my brother anymore, but I still looked through the binoculars crying. “One day he’ll be his own self again…” I looked through the binoculars staring at the rice fields remembering about the memories with my brother. Just then, I saw something up close, something I wasn’t supposed to see. The Wiggly figure.
